Workshop Description

In clinic, physiotherapist guided sleep optimisation to reduce back pain and better performance.

A new model of care for impressive, holistic patient outcomes.

Emerging research shows that during deep sleep, the brain refreshes its neural pain pathways.  Interrupting healthy sleep thus worsens pain and correcting poor quality sleep can have a profound impact in improving back pain.

In this workshop, Professor Tony Goldschlager, (Neurosurgeon), Professor Scott Ayton (Neuroscientist) and Peter Allen (Physiotherapist) outline their new practical model for incorporating sleep optimisation into physiotherapy care.

This includes a pathway for sleep disorder screening and a novel physiotherapist fitted bed system for optimal body positioning for recovery.

Case studies from a recent feasibility trial are discussed.

Clinics will be invited to apply to join Professor Goldschlager’s pilot roll out – undertaken by SD Labs, a partnership with the engineer founders of Sleeping Duck.

Company Profile

Research shows that Sleep quality and body positioning during sleep can have a profound impact on the perception of pain, yet sleep is typically poorly considered in the management of chronic pain patients. Headed by Professor Tony Goldschlager, Neurosurgeon, SD Labs is a unique collaboration between surgeons, doctors, physiotherapists, sleep scientists and the engineer founders of Australian startup Sleepingduck. Its mission is to build an evidence based model of care for doctors and physiotherapists to incorporate practical sleep quality optimisation into the care they offer their patients.  SD Labs is currently working with select clinics to implement their sleep optimisation model of care into their practice. They invite interested clinics to reach out to them to discuss.
